Zug / Düsseldorf, 8 May 2008 BIOPETROL INDUSTRIES AG, a leading European manufacturer of biodiesel, welcomes the German Government's endorsement of the European biofuels programme, which is also supported by other leading politicians. BIOPETROL values positively the moves towards a more objective discussion, pointing out that the food shortages afflicting some regions of the world can only be eliminated if their causes are investigated impartially.

BIOPETROL is facing up to the global challenge to solve the triangular problem of supplying food to the world's growing population, combating the menace of climate change, and coping with a burgeoning demand for energy. BIOPETROL does not regard food and energy production as in mutual opposition, but as complementary parts of the added-value chain. Biodiesel produced from rapeseed is after all a coproduct in the production of food and has no influence on food prices, so it cannot be in competition with food production.

Quotes from the chief news reports:

Netzeitung.de 6 May 2008:
Seehofer warns against mud-slinging
Horst Seehofer (CDU), Germany's agriculture minister, has also warned against any vilification of bioenergy in response to the worldwide food crisis. Without renewable raw materials, he said in Berlin on Tuesday, the objectives of climate protection were "in no way attainable", nor were biofuels the main cause of exploding food prices. Around the world, he emphasized, only two per cent of the available farmland was being used for cultivating bio-ethanol plants.

Bild am Sonntag, April 2008:
Chancellor Angela Merkel still says the European Union objective for bio-ethanol to make up to ten per cent of fuel consumption by 2020 is correct.

N-TV.de 6 May 2008:
Environment minister Gabriel has expressed his belief in the continuing use of bio-ethanols and the importation of energy-plant products from the tropics.

WirtschaftsWoche, www.wiwo.de 6 May 2008:
In view of the rising worldwide demand for food, says Seehofer, agriculture in the industrial nations must be reinforced: "You can't strengthen the weak by weakening the strong".

PR-inside 6 May 2008:
The German Government believes that demand for biofuels has little to do with rising food prices around the world. Agriculture minister Seehofer and environment minister Gabriel rejected criticism of Germany's bio-ethanol strategy on Tuesday, defending the plan to extract ever more electricity, heat and fuels from plants by 2020.

REGIERUNGonline.de 6 May 2008:
There is no contradiction in cultivating both food and energy plants. But the ministers for economic affairs and the environment agree that only with sustainable agriculture can feeding the world and protecting world climate be reconciled.

BIOPETROL INDUSTRIES AG continues its policy of further extending the BIOPETROL group's productive capacities.
