MARKETS
In Europe, Frost & Sullivan industry experts anticipate annual market growth of up to 26 % (until 2011). They do so for several reasons (see Market Position). Biodiesel production has increased steadily in Germany in recent years. Since 2000 production has increased nearly eightfold, and annual production capacity in Germany is expected to increase by a further 500,000 tonnes in 2006.
Diesel is growing scarce — Biodiesel is less expensive
With more and more petrol-engined vehicles being replaced by diesels in Europe,
demand for diesel fuel is on the increase. We assume that no new oil refineries
will be built in Europe. That will make fossil diesel fuel scarce, and biodiesel
will increasingly offset this growing shortfall. Diesel and biodiesel are
no longer competing products; they complement each other. An admixture of
biodiesel partly plugs the gap, so biodiesel has an important role to play
in meeting basic diesel fuel requirements. All the signs indicate that the
EU will increase its present 5 % admixture ceiling.
